As a Practice Manager, training new staff is your responsibility. Recruiting the right candidate is only half the job as cultivation of productivity and talent is as significant as the former.

Here are 4 steps you should not overlook:

Training Manual:
Having a detailed and bespoke training manual on what your staff should be trained will not only will this give you a clearly-defined sense of direction, it will also become the new recruit’s able guide. They will be able to leave it on their desk and refer to it when they need.

50/50 balance: You are the best candidate to explain company vision & mission to the new recruit. But to give the new recruit a holistic overview of the company, its background & culture it’s always advisable to expose them to other department heads/clinicians during the training, giving then a complete overview of how the surgery is run.

BIG is not always the best: While it is crucial to draw the big picture of the surgery but don’t only focus on the big picture. Indicating your interest and concern over the details and the little things will motivate your employee to follow suit.

Teach & Test! On one hand you need to ‘Teach’ what the Surgery is expecting from the new employee. But on the other, use the training period as a ‘Test’ to ascertain actual absorption before exposing the new recruit to your clients. This should be a safe environment for them to learn, make mistakes and find their feet.
