Are you a Practice Manager or Practice Administrator? Read on to identify the key strengths and characteristics of each role that would enable the identification of vital requirements needed to fulfill each position.

By definition, a Practice Manager would manage the overall operational front of a GP, within the sphere of primary care. A Practice Administrator on the other hand is largely held accountable for the various administrative duties of a Practice from filing, data/ information storing, handling patient registrations to managing medical appointments.

Typically, Doctors who run Practices would look for efficient and confident Practice Managers to manage the daily operational front of their Practice. Given that most of them would prefer to adopt a hands-off methodology once employing a Practice Manager, this is your queue to ascertain how ‘in charge’ you want to be within the work place.

Alternatively, Practice Administrators would at times consider delegating work to the tier above, as much as the tier below. Especially in the case of handling medical matters, the likelihood of consulting a doctor would be high. Likewise a Practice Administrator would be required to call on the help and support of the IT head where they would work better within a team, as opposed to making single-handed decisions.

Here’s a simple checklist to help identify key characteristics and fundamental differences between the 2 roles:

Practice Manager Practice Administrator
Authorised to issue cheques and handle payment matters? Seek GP approvals for staff leave requests?
Signing various legal agreements relating to the Practice? Attending weekly meetings and record the meeting minutes for circulation?
End-to-end complaint management? Coordinate with a 3rd party agency for staff salaries?
Head the weekly meetings of the Practice? Carryout staff interviews in the presence of a Doctor?
Carry out staff interviews independently? Handling the online payment approval process, to be approved by a GP?

In which column did you answer most questions affirmatively? Think a minute, as this could very well indicate your speciality.
